In 2017, Dzenana Halimovic of RFE/RL’s Balkan Service extended and invigorated The Faces of Srebrenica project which began in 2015 to mark the 20th anniversary of Europe’s worst atrocity since World War II: the massacre at Srebrenica. Halimovic worked to ensure that the victims of the massacre would be remembered as individuals and not merely as numbers by documenting, with over 4,000 photographs, the lives and identities of the men and boys executed by Bosnian Serb forces. She also collected photographs of the many women who were forced to flee and detailed the loss they experienced during the war.
